2000	Inaugural issue released, initially published as a quarterly journal.
2003	Changed to a monthly publication schedule.
2004	Covered by the Science Citation Index Expanded (SCIE).
2005	First Impact Factor received.
2006	IJMS became the first MDPI journal to start using the submission system at submit.mdpi.org (no longer available).
2007	The following topical sections were setup: Biochemistry, Molecular Biology and Biophysics, Nutraceuticals and Chemopreventives (later renamed Bioactives and Nutraceuticals), Physical Chemistry, Theoretical and Computational Chemistry, Material Sciences and Nanotechnology, Molecular Pathology, and Green Chemistry.
2008	MDPI joined CrossRef and started assigning DOI numbers to each paper published in the IJMS. All papers from this year on were released under the Creative Commons (CC-BY) license. IJMS was archived in PubMed Central (PMC) and covered in PubMed. The journal was moved from www.mdpi.org onto the publishing platform at www.mdpi.com in October 2008.
